Yeah, meant to say iWork. Duh.

I heard rumors that Pages 07 may have a "layout mode" and "word processing mode" or something like that, which would be nice.

Good call on GoogleDocs. I've played with it in the past, but didn't consider using it as my *.doc stand-in.

iLife - yes. But I think you're talking about iWork (with Pages and Keynote). The new version will probably come out some time in the next few months. For $79 it's a pretty good deal for the two programs it contains - once iWork 07 comes out it will have a spreadsheet app - it'll be compatible with Excel.

To be honest though, Pages (what would be the Word equivalent) is not a good replacement for Word. Yes, it does open .doc files and can handle most word processing tasks but it's just not a very easy to use interface, at least iWork 06 isn't. Especially when you've spent the better part of your life using MS Office to handle your word processing. Just so you know, Text Edit does a pretty good job with most .doc files.

Don't get me wrong I'll upgrade when it comes out, mostly because I'm hooked on Keynote - a far superior product compared to the Mac version of PowerPoint, IMO worth the cost of the whole suite of apps. If the spreadsheet stuff is important to you then you'll still want to get Office 2008 when it's available. My guess is it'll be pretty functional but lack a lot of the power of Excel.

Might also want to check out OpenOffice.org, or GoogleDocs as zero cost options to span the gap between now and when Office 2008 is released.

Hey, do you use iLife? I just picked up an intel iMac and am trying to figure out where to go with word processing. Don't want to purchase Office until it's native on intel processors, and Office 2008 isn't coming out soon enough for my needs. I'm hoping iLife 07 + spreadsheet app comes out in the next month or two. NeoOffice 2.0 doesn't sound like it's ready for primetime.

I need to be interoperable with Office docs, ultimately, but plan to stick with OS X as my main platform (i.e., don't want to have to rely on Parallels or Boot Camp, if necessary).
