Yesterday was Orville’s (our baby) 2nd birthday and we had a nice little party for him. Little in that it was at our house and once you cram more than 5 people into it the square footage doesn’t really matter anymore. He made out like a bandit – it’s funny because when I was little I used to think that we had a pretty small family. With mom & dad, me and my brothers we had 5. Add in Grammy and Poppa, Uncle Dave, and Grandma Smith and that was what I considered my immediate family. Now yes, Dad does have a sister – a very sweet woman, but for the entirety of my life she and my uncle have lived in far away places not often visited by the Smith 5. So Christmases and birthdays were at max about 8, maybe 10 people.

Yesterday we planned on having 19 people in our house. The roll call was as follows:

The Smith Family (Us) 5

The Smith Family (My Parents, Brothers & Sister-in-law) 5

The Winkelmann Family (Kirsten’s Dad & Brother) 2

The Huber’s (Kirsten’s Sister, Brother-in-law and their infant son (3)

The Hart Family (My Uncle, Aunt and Cousins) 4

Add it up and it’s not such a small family. It’s actually quite large compared to what I was used to as a kid. Unfortunately one of my cousins was sick and so he and my aunt couldn’t make it. But still, we had a crowd in our little living room and dining room. It was fun to see everybody talking and enjoying each other. It made me think how in less than a decade, God willing, our family will be even bigger.

We prepared for a crowd so 6 1/4 lbs. of browned hamburger, 6 cans of Manwich, 42 buns and a few bags of chips and pretzels and a few bottles of pop waited for our guests. After everyone had their first helpings I started to get my plate together as I did that I started to think about what was going on.

Here we were celebrating our baby’s 2nd birthday, lots of food, presents, smiles and fun – and in the midst of it I started to wonder about my kids birth parents. Specifically their mother. Did she remember that two years ago that day she gave birth to a little boy? Did she mourn the fact that she wasn’t celebrating it with him? What would this day have been like if he was with her? Would there have been presents? Food? A celebration at all?

After we ate we opened the gifts, then gathered around little Orville with a big double layer chocolate-chip cookie instead of a cake. With 16 people gathered around him we sang happy birthday. He’s probably never been the sole attention of so many people, it was all a little too much for him. As we sang, he started to cry. I calmed him down and he tore into his birthday cookie with all the fervor that a two-year old boy can have.

It was a neat place to be and I feel blessed that it was in our home, with our family.

Happy Birthday little man.

You’re What!

Adopting – three children – at one time.

I don’t know why but the dude from the B-52′s voice always seems to come out of other people’s mouths when they find out we’ve decided and are fully in the process of adopting three children. You’ve probably seen or rather read Kirsten’s perspective on our adoption so I thought I’d share a little about what its like for me having had kids for a little over 4 months now. Since we’re not sharing their names on the internet Kirsten is calling them c1, c2 and r. But I thought I’d confuse you even more and so lets just call them Amelia, Wilbur and Orville. Amelia (Our almost 5-year old daughter), Wilbur (3-year old son) and Orville (19-month old son). Why those names? I don’t know, maybe someday I’ll do a search and replace and put in their real ones.

Wilbur is still figuring out how to annunciate which makes for some interesting sounding words. Particularly the word truck. Kirsten tells me they all use extremely foul language when they talk about trucks at that age. For example we would be riding in the van and he’d see, for the 397th time in 15 minutes that he sees a truck and will announce – “I see a big *uck! He got over it real quick after a couple of tastes of Lifebuoy. Relax, I’m kidding of course. We’re working on it and it sounds much less crude.

Speaking of mispronunciation, apparently neither Amelia or Wilbur had ever heard of soccer. So they both called it cocker – we worked quite a bit on that word putting emphasis on the ‘S’ sound.

Amelia: “We going to cocker tonight?”
Kirsten & I: “No, we’re going to ssssssssssoccer tonight – say it like this – sssssssssoccer”
Amelia: “sssssssssss cocker”
Us: “No sweetie, theres no “cah” sound. It’s just sssssssoccer.”
Amelia: “Ssssssssssssssoccer”
Us: “Yes! Very good!”
Wilbur: “We go to cocker tonight?”

Amelia is a lot of fun. When they first moved home we did a lot of playing where I would be a monster or some other ‘thing’ that would pick them up and toss them onto the couch or the chair. After about a week and a half I started to get kind of tired. (That feeling hasn’t gone away yet, and from what I’ve heard, it won’t for at least another 16 – 20 years.) She would ask Kirsten if I was going to play with them when I got home and Kir would tell her yes. Then when I’d get home she’d want to be picked up and have me act like a monster and chase her around the living room. Her equation for play is as follows:

Which is a fine equation as long as I have more energy than they do. Which usually isn’t the case. When I started playing with them doing regular things like driving cars on the coffee table or anything other than picking them up – Amelia started asking if I would play with them, while I was playing with them. Weird.

Who does Number Two Work for?
We’re potty training Wilbur – and without getting into too many details he’s got #1 down except for aiming and the whole part about actually telling us when he needs to go. Although last night Wilbur was in the bath tub playing and I walked into the boys room to get his pajamas out, when I went back in the bathroom he was sitting in the tub with this panicked look on his face. I ask what’s wrong and he says “I need to go potty.” Thankfully at this point I had finished bathing him so real quickly I get him out, dry him enough that he’s not dripping and get him to the toilet. He’s a little short so we have a concordance of the bible on the floor, he stands on that and lets loose. Dude wasn’t kidding. I was pretty happy he held it and didn’t go it the tub.

Turns out though he’s pretty good at holding other stuff to. Namely the pooh. We’ve given up on trying to teach him that he needs to go in the potty while putting him in pull up diapers. It’s like saying “We really want you to go in the toilet but since you’re gonna crap your pants anyway we figure we’ll just put you in pants it’s okay to crap in.” We don’t get it, little guy waits a couple days and then has a man size steamer in his underpants in the morning and a smile on his face.

Make em say Uhh, Uhh Na Na Na Na
Orville is a funny little guy but he’s taking his good old time learning to talk. So everthing is ‘Uhh.’ Although he can say Ma Ma, Da Da, Hi and Hiyah. Just enough words to greet Kirsten or me and then Judo chop us. If he starts talking in the same way he started walking it will be 4 words one day and then he probably won’t shut up the next. He didn’t really roll over or crawl much and then two days before we brought the kids home he started walking. He understands most of what we say, so that’s good but since he is lacking in speech and a lot of times we’re telling him to not touch this or that we get a Uhh then a Whaah followed by fake crying. All together though, he’s a lot of fun. He might be the only baby we’ll ever have and we’re enjoying him a lot.

Half-up, half-down and lots of pink
Amelia has a really well developed personality and because of the background she came from she’s a bit motherly so we have some issues in terms of us being the adults and her being a child. She really seems to be thriving in our home though and she learns very well. She just started preschool and its so cool to know she’s making friends and learning. She was so cute on her first day of school. Someday I’ll post a picture. Being a father to a little girl is still kind of wierd to me, being with the boys seems so much more natural, probably because I only have brothers. She’s getting to do things that, without all the stuff they had to go through, would have never done.

My parents (Gramps and Grammy) got her a bicycle, not for her birthday (which is coming soon I am reminded almost daily) but just because. They feel like they’ve missed out on her for the 4 some years she wasn’t with us yet. And we all have, but she really brings a dynamic to our house that makes it different, better than if it were just the boys.

Kirsten does her hair (half-up/half-down most of the time) and helps her with her clothes and I get to be the big mean guy who doesn’t give in to her pouty face and won’t let her get off her bike when she runs over a pebble making her wobble on her training wheels. But I also get to be the guy who walks with her as she rides her shiny pink bike around the block for the first time in her life. And someday I’ll be the guy who walks her down the aisle to get married. (Aaaah!) But knowing that before that happens we’ve got a lot of ground to cover and a lot of learning to do makes these days of adjustment seem like they are moving fast already.

My Dad can beat up your Dad!
Kirsten posted about how many months until Orville is 18. It’s a lot. So far we’ve had a few hard days and a lot of fun and someday we’ll have an awesome story to tell. From 2 to 5, two jobs to one, from orphans to adopted sons and daughters, from a couple to a family. God does a lot with a little time doesn’t He? By the way, if we don’t have any other kids I’ll be 45 when Orville is 18.

I come home to a house with toy snakes and bugs on the floor, loud voices and a little girl that doesn’t think there’s such a thing as too much lip gloss. So while it might be quite a noisy house with 3 kids who don’t yet understand what it means to use ‘inside voices’ and parents who don’t yet understand just what the heck we’re supposed to be doing it’s a nice home. One might even say a Love Shack. A Funky little shack. Funky little shack.

A lot has happened since I last wrote and to fill you all in I thought I’d tell you about it in my favorite blogging format – Q&A style. Sure, I could just send you to her blog, busy little fingers has she – updates, she does frequently. Wow, that is a Yoda sounding sentence. Better jump right into it before I get all Frank Oz on you.

Q. So Josh what’s been happening?

A. You couldn’t come up with a better question to start this off than that? Wow, you’re slipping bro.

Q. Sorry, but its been a while. Just answer the question.

A. Right – Well, where should I start. I’ve got a new job – that’s something right?

Q. Yes, you’re at Coltène/Whaledent now – what are you doing?

A. I’m in the graphic design department, working with 2 other really talented designers. It’s nice. I’ve never had the opportunity to work in a creative team like this before and I’m finding it to be quite refreshing. Good to bounce around some ideas, and at bare minimum, I have two other people who empathize with me about having to add “just a little more” copy to an ad or make the logo bigger again.

Q. So it sounds like a great opportunity – tell me again, what is it exactly that Coltène/Whaledent does?

A. We make Whale dentures. You know, for whales. Some are made of baleen.

Q. Really?

A. Sure, we have a sister company in New Zealand that specializes in eyewear – Coltène/Whalegoggles. I’m just kidding. We do make dental products, but as far as I know, we only do that for people. A lot of neat stuff too – mostly things that make me want to brush and floss really well so I don’t ever have to have them used on me.

Q. So what’s so great about it?

A. Well, for one thing the hours are pretty cool – 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM. The way I look at it – I’ve got 45 extra minutes than the rest of you working folks. And I’m working on a Mac. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have my computer at work, actually function the way it should. All day long. And when I do keyboard shortcuts, they actually work – no goofy window button in my way baby. Look out! I’m about to Command+Option Upside your head.

Q. What?

A. Sorry – I get a little carried away when it comes to working on a Mac. Did I mention that it’s a PowerMac G4 with dual processors?

Q. No, you didn’t.

A. Oh, well it is.

Q. Great, well, moving along – what else has been happening in the world of Smith?

A. Well, we are pretty deep into the process of adopting three kids. That’s a pretty big happening.

Q. Yeah, it is. How are things going?

A. Better than I could have imagined – well, that’s not exactly true. I have a pretty vivid imagination – you know it could be better if, for instance, the kids came with a lifetime supply of Skittles. Yeah, that would be great.

Q. Did you know that you can taste a rainbow of fruit flavors when you eat them? The skittles I mean, not the children.

A. Actually, yes I did know that, and I understood the question – no need to clarify. The kids have been well-behaved, well-mannered and well-hyphened in other areas too. It will be a lot of work but, we’re really looking forward to them coming home.

Q. That’s great. Remind me, what are the details?

A. The oldest is a 4-and-a-half year-old girl, followed by an almost 3 year-old boy and a 15 month-old boy. They’re all such good ages, then again we’re of the opinion that most ages are pretty good.

Q. Wow, could we see a picture?

A. Sure, click here.

Q. Well, that was nice.

A. Yeah, funny too. We’re not ready to share what the kids look like with the world wide web. Rest assured that they are indeed very cute, and that this blog will not be overrun with posts only about them and the latest cute thing they said or the frequency, consistency or hue of their bowel movements.

Q. Well, sure sounds like you’ll have a lot of fun, but it will be work too – have you thought about that?

A. Absolutely, we’re not totally insane, just mildly. Enough that we probably could be institutionalized, but not enough that we’d need to be in special jackets all day. We’ve been pretty busy lately, working on the house, getting their rooms ready, building a new closet in our room, lots of stuff to be busy with. That’s why I haven’t updated the blog.

Q. How have people reacted finding out about you adopting?

A. For the most part people are really happy and supportive. I do have to say that we’ve been asked some of the funniest questions when people find out that we’re adopting three kids.

Q. Really, like what?

A. Well if they know a little about our journey through infertility they ask us if we’re still going to “keep trying”. I always tell them, no. The whole idea of procreation is such a messy business, at this stage of our lives we’ve pretty much just stopped. Then I laugh at them. Of course we’re still “trying” if that mean having intercourse. We’re young, and I find my wife to be extremely attractive. If they mean, will Kirsten go on birth-control, that’s a big no. We figure if God wants to choose now to have us get pregnant, then not only does He have a great sense of humor but, ultimately a much bigger plan than we’ve seen so far.

Q. Hmm. That’s an interesting opinion. Say, I have a cousin whose neighbor’s sitster’s neice couldn’t get pregnant and they adopted a little girl from Uzbeckistan and wouldn’t you know it, she got pregnant with triplets?!

A. That’s great, good for her. I hope that you’re not inferring that adoption is some sort of magical infertility treatment. Because that would be plain stupid. If God chooses to give people who had struggled with infertility biological children, after they’ve adopted others, it was His plan from the beginning – completely independent from adoption.

Q. Oh, no I wasn’t saying that – I was just telling you a story I had heard…

A. I know. After all, I’m you and you’re actually just asking the questions I want you to ask.

Q. You’re right! You’re so smart, and extremely good-looking I might add. So, what if you do get pregnant?

A. Then obviously we’re supposed to have more than 3 kids. His timing is His issue, following the plan that He’s revealed to us is ours.

Q. Good point, I’m glad I asked the question.

A. Me too.

Q. Any other things to you’d like to share?

A. Actually, no.

Q. By the way, you know you’re posting this just in time to get it into the month of April – so you won’t have any “breaks” in your blog archive?

A. Oh, how convenient – an added benefit to interviewing with such a nice gentleman. I’ve had an absolutely wonderful time.

Q. Well, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk to me today. I hope we can do it again sometime.

A. Me too.

There’s really a lot going on in my life right now and it seems like it’s been forever since I’ve posted here but I wanted to get in a quick entry. Here we go – in rapid fire mode.

So much to be… thankful for.

We just started our new ABF last night. (That’s Adult Bible Fellowship for those of you that don’t know. It’s The Chapel’s term for Sunday School classes – sounds much more grown up when you say “ABF”.) We had 31 people there! I was and still am quite amazed at the turnout.

It’s been a few months since we ended our other class and I was quite anxious to get started. Looks like the time of waiting and promotion have worked well. The class is called Young Marrieds PM (YMPM) & we meet at 5:30 in the Great Commission room. We had a great first night with a few familiar faces and quite a few people that I’ve never seen before, which is awesome because it is an opportunity to meet new people and make more friends. Hopefully everybody will come back and we’ll get to know each other better in the coming weeks, months and years. We’ve got a good range of ages and marriages from what I call “Risky Couples” (You’ve got to be a risk taker if you’re not engaged and you go to a young marrieds abf) all the way up to 9 years of marriage. The best part about this is that we can all learn from each other. We mature in our marriages and faith in different ways and I can’t think of any better way for a couple to learn how to (and sometimes – how not to) treat each other than with other Christian couples.
So if you’re reading this and we’re one of the couples who gave us a shot on Sunday night – thanks again for coming and I really hope to get to know you better and am looking forward to next week.

So much to be… praying about.

I’m surprised that Kirsten hasn’t posted this on her site already but we’ve been matched with a sibling group of three. A 4-year old girl, and two boys, a two-and-a-half year old and an 11-month old. We went to the agency to read their case history and it wasn’t quite the rosy picture that it was originally told to us. We’re at a point where we can’t move forward until we get some questions answered, and the funny thing is that we don’t know how we’ll proceed after we find out the answers. We’re just waiting on God to give us the info we need to make a decision at the time we need it. We’re holding off on seeing pictures or meeting these kids until we have the answers we need and have made a decision to move forward. We really want to make this decision based on facts and not emotions and seeing what they look like, and having their cute little faces in our heads certainly won’t make it easy to keep emotionally uninvolved. In the mean time, please continue to pray for our kids and wisdom for us as we seek God’s will in this situation.

So much to be… working on.

We’ve been doing a fair amount of work on the homestead. New(er) appliances replaced the older ones in our kitchen which we donated to church. I’m installing new baseboard molding and with the old appliances out of the garage all we need to do is get Ben & Ashley to take our old couch. Speaking of Ben & Ashley…

So much to be… excited about.

Yes, Ben & Ashley we’re married on January 7th in a great ceremony at church followed by the best wedding reception I’ve been to. It’s a whole different world now kids. Have fun learning all the things you never knew (or sometimes never wanted to know) about each other. Ahh, young marriages, so much to learn, so many memories to be made, so many little reasons to argue with each other! Have fun – see you in YMPM.

So much to be… geeked about.

Don’t want to spend too much time on these but if you’re interested check out the links!

Macworld Keynote – Intel processors in Apple computers! 14 Million iPods sold over the holiday quarter – for comparison check out this press release from 1 year ago. Keep in mind this release is talking about the TOTAL # sold to that point vs. 14 from last quarter. Can you say phenomenon?

Underwood Podcast – Speaking of phenomenons, Gary Underwood, Senior Pastor of Delaware Grace Brethren Church has a shiny new podcast, brought to you by, well – me. And Feedburner.com. And, technically him, and the church’s website.

Truth be told, I got tired of downloading the individual mp3′s, tagging them and adding them to my iPod manually, so I created a podcast feed and saved myself a few extra minutes each week. Being ever so generous with other people’s stuff I thought you might like to jump on the bandwagon too.

You can find it at dgbc-podcast.blogspot.com or if you’re one of the 42 Million people out there with an iPod you can get the podcast straight from the iTunes Music Store. So subscribe, tell your mom to subscribe, tell the kid across the street with the 60 GB iPod with video that you’re so jealous of to subscribe too. I did!

Other free mac stuff.
Skype – Skype is a great, free application that lets you talk, (yes with your words and voice) to anyone around the world for free. It sounds really good too. I was chatting with Feathers and it sounded like he was sitting next to me. But not in an uncomfortable way, like when you can feel someone breathing and maybe even see nose hair peek at you as they breathe out. No, skype sounds good, and it’s got a nice little instant messenger feature in it too. They have a paid option that lets you call phone numbers from your computer. You can also sign up for a telephone number that rings on your computer and has voicemail – a full year for $38. But the free part is really quality. Check it out – my username is gitgan so if you download it, add me to your contacts and maybe we can talk.

Quicksilver – a sweet application launcher for OS X. Saves you from having to use the dock or finder to start applications.

Google earth- it’s been out for PC for a while but the mac version looks better… because it’s on a mac. Get google erf!
